It said that the company would be offering a single Home Premium or Professional license to college students for just $29.99, nearly the same price as Apple’s Snow Leopard OS.

Microsoft has offered OEM licenses for computer builders to upgrade to the latest version of Windows.

Those aspiring to take the OEM must consider a few things. First, the install will wipe out any data on your hard drive, unlike the Upgrade edition, so its important to back up your data. Moreover, you are not allowed to transfer its license from one machine to another. There is no support available for OEM licenses, so in case of trouble you need to count on Internet resources.

As compared to Windows Vista OEM, Windows 7’s OEM prices are ever-so-slightly cheaper, with Home Premium being identical to Vista, and the Professional and Ultimate editions coming in at $5 cheaper than their Vista counterparts.

Newegg says that it is currently taking pre-orders on the OS. The pre-order program will expire on October 20, two days before the official launch of Windows 7.

For students, the discount program remains the cheapest option. The expired pre-order program was the second cheapest option, and now a third option – an OEM edition – provides a slightly more expensive alternative to those who missed the pre-order and can’t get a student discount.

The Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit (ACT) 5.5

Microsoft's new operating system has created hustle and bustle and has become the talk of the town with the launch which is due on 22 October, 2009. History of Microsoft's operating system upgrades has been tarnished of late, and the company is determined not to repeat the same mistakes. One area in which the company took a lot of Flack was the lack of device drivers for Windows Vista. Microsoft has it in the bag now, so they say. Updates expect to find a lot of drivers available on the day of liberation, which should make the upgrade process smoother.

Windows Vista Update

If you are upgrading your Windows Vista system, you must have a smooth ride. There is a caveat: if you're running Windows Vista Home Basic, there is no upgrade path for you. You need to install the full product Windows 7. If you're upgrading from Windows Vista Home Premium, the upgrade to Windows Vista should be relatively easy. His team is already very likely to be capable of running Windows 7, and unless there is some very old and very unreliable devices, you should be congratulated in relation to drivers.

If you are upgrading to Windows 7 from an earlier version of Windows (like XP), there's good news and bad news. The good news is that Windows 7 contains a virtual environment that can run Windows XP. This will work for you if you have an old, irreplaceable piece of hardware or software that must run on XP. When you need to make it work, virtually enough to run XP and run like the wind. XP drivers will work from the virtual XP environment. That will not be the case if you try to run devices using XP drivers from the Windows environment 7, however.

You also have to verify that your older hardware is in good enough shape to run Windows 7. Microsoft offers a compatibility testing tool that will give your hardware configuration while to see if you need to make any change in hardware before you install Windows 7. The older devices, hard drives smaller and minimum memory requirements are more likely to travel by old hardware.

If your hardware is very old ... as in the Jurassic or pre-Columbian ... may want to consider just buying a low-cost desktop that comes with Windows 7 is already installed. In fact the old hardware is unlikely to meet the requirements of Windows 7. Even if you can get it to load and run, it's performance will suffer greatly and are not likely to reap the benefits of improving their system.
